Overview

Course content and focus areas 

The Master in Religious Studies covers a broad spectrum of religions and their manifestations. The study program features a combination of methods and theories pursuing dimensions of interreligious and intercultural exchange, religion and society, diversity and gender, orders and hierarchies, philosophy and ethics, literature, media, and art. Within the program, you can choose one of four different foci: 1st Comparative Religion; 2nd Cultural History of Judaism; 3rd Cultural History of Christianity; 4th Cultural History of Islam. Our multi-disciplinary approach offers a set of academic skills that will enhance a wide range of career opportunities. Please notice that the language of instruction is almost exclusively German.

Conditions of admission

  • Admission requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies or related subject, or an equivalent degree;
  • Possible special requirements set by the examination office (max. 120 CPs from Bachelor’s degree);
  • Applicants with an international university entrance qualification and Bachelor's degree must prove sufficient German language skills according to the regulations of the Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH), the German language test for university entrance.
Provisional admission Provisional admission is possible even if the student has not yet finished the Bachelor’s degree, under the condition that a transcript of records or equivalent document is submitted. Additionally applicants have to provide a proof of enrollment in Bachelor's programme and a detailed certificate about the status and the expected completion of the bachelor's programme.  
Mode of admission Admission is not restricted. Students will be directly admitted if the admission requirements are met in full.

Documents to be submitted
  • if you are not already enrolled at Goethe-University Frankfurt:
    a university entrance qualification (e.g. A-Levels)
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate
  • if the Bachelor's degree has not yet been completed:
    - a transcript of records or equivalent document listing the content of the study programme and average grade
    - detailed certificate about the status and the expected completion of the bachelor's programme
    - proof of current enrollment in the bachelor programme
  • if the first degree was obtained at an international higher education institution:
    certificate of German language skills. See here for more information about the required German language skills.
  • certificate of Arabic language skills
  • you may need to submit other documents depending on your country of origin and your previous education; please see the general information about applying for a Master’s degree.
